16 years ago......

16 years ago today, Anthony had open heart surgery. He was 16 months old. The day he was born the doctors told me he had a condition called Tetrology of Fallot. (I have an explanation of this condition at the end.) When it was time for the surgery, Anthony and I stayed in the hospital for 10 days. Even though St. Francis is a heart hospital and originally started as a children's heart hospital, whenever children come in for open heart surgery it's a big thing. So many people would come to just say hi and to see the " TET " baby. By the time it came for his surgery, Anthony was so" Blue". His lips, nose, ears, between his eyebrows, around his mouth, and both arms to his elbows, and both legs up to his knees were so blue. He would pant to catch his breath especially when it was raining, very hot, or when he had a fever. The doctors told me he would faint in my arms when crying, which he never did because when he would start to cry, I would blow in his face to make him stop. They said he wouldn't walk until after his surgery but he did at 14 months old. He was growing normally until he was 9 months old but that's when his heart really started to give him problems. It was a week before Christmas and he needed to go into the hospital for 3 days, and have a cardiac catheterization done to determine how bad his heart had gotten. The cardiologist said we had to start giving him medicine to try and prolong the time before the surgery, it had to be given to him around the clock so we had to wake up in the middle of the night to give it to him. From that point on he stopped growing, his hair even stopped growing. We couldn't get him to gain any weight either, he was 20 lbs 6 ozs then. The doctors wanted him to be at least 25 lbs for the surgery, but, I was 7 months pregnant with Dominic and being Anthony's symptoms were getting worse, they decided they couldn't wait any longer, he was only 20 lbs. 2 ozs. Even with all his problems he was such a terror. The night before his surgery the head surgical nurse came down to say hi and asked " where's the " TET " baby? " We told her " that's him the one running up and down the hall, opening up the drawers, bothering the nurses. " She said " That's him? " " If he's like that now, just wait til he's fixed!!" Well she was right. He's been active and healthy ever since. After the surgery, when it was time for his respirator to came out, he still needed oxygen, but being a baby, he wouldn't keep those little nose plugs in his nose, so he had an " oxygen tent. " He had a line stitched into his artery in his wrist, that would monitor his vital signs. One night he had his hands on his chest and the nurse said " look how sweet, he's rubbing his incision " No he wasn't, he was unscrewing the line that was in his wrist!! Just as she finished saying that to us, I noticed blood on his bandage, she lifted up his hand, the line came out, and blood was spurting all inside his tent!! Those nurses had to work so fast to get the bleeding under control! Everyone told us they had never had a baby do that before!! Well, they never met Anthony, even at that age, after just having open heart surgery he was good with his hands !! I was always a little nervous because after his surgery I asked the surgeon how Anthony was doing and all he said was " Just worry about the next 15 years " and walked away. I will never forget that. But last year was 15 years and now it's been 16 years, so I feel really good about getting past that mark. He does go to the cardiologist once a year, for an EKG, ECHO, a Heart Monitor, and for the Doctor to listen to the murmurs he still has. Here are 2 pictures of Anthony in the hospital I have others but can't find them right now, but I do remember I didn't like looking at them because I was in such denial, I thought he looked so good, but then after he was fixed and started to gain weight again I realized how sick he really was and looked. I don't like remembering those days. The most vivid good memory I have from those days in the hospital is when he was in the ICU, after the surgery. The nurses warned us before hand, about how Anthony would be on a respirator, hooked up to so many lines,in his neck and his wrists, have pacemaker wires and tubes coming out of his chest and he would be in a medical induced coma. But all I saw was a perfectly pink baby. He was the most beautiful sight ever!!!

He was so good after the surgery, he just laid still and smiled.

So tall and handsome !!!

Normal Heart and Heart With Tetralogy of Fallot
Figure A shows the normal structure and blood flow in the interior of the heart. Figure B shows a heart with the four defects of tetralogy of Fallot.
Babies and children with tetralogy of Fallot have episodes of cyanosis (si-a-NO-sis), which is a bluish tint to the skin, lips, and fingernails. Cyanosis occurs because the oxygen level in the blood is below normal.
Tetralogy of Fallot must be repaired with open‑heart surgery, either soon after birth or later in infancy. The timing of the surgery depends on how severely the pulmonary valve is narrowed.
Outlook
Over the past few decades, the diagnosis and treatment of tetralogy of Fallot has greatly improved. As a result, the majority of children with this heart defect grow to adulthood. However, they need lifelong medical care from a specialist to make sure they stay as healthy as possible.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN YOU FIT.......

We don't have any air conditioning in any of the upstairs bedrooms but we do have 1 unit in the living room and 1 unit in the dining room. So when it's hot everyone wants to stay downstairs. We took care of that last night by opening up the futon and they all shared. If you look closely you'll see Butchy Boy in the mix as well. Half of the family isn't even here and we still have a crowd!
I love having a big family, When Frank and I were first married, I always said I wanted a big family because I liked the idea that every night it would be like having company over for dinner.

Angelo, Aunty Norma, Butchy Boy, Daniella BellaRina, and Rocco. Dominic's on the Love seat alone. How did he get away with that??

Can you guess they are all related?
What a great shot.

GINA... BIRDS AGAIN ???

I threw out a whole loaf of Italian bread this morning, and only after about 1 hour this is what they did to it. I just think it's cool the way they tunneled it out instead of just pecking at the out side. Also I had hung an old watering can from the grape vines just for decoration, and you'll see that a bird made a nest in it. What I like about it, is that she used sticks to raise the floor of the can up so she wouldn't have to go too deep inside of it. Birds are so great!!

3 DOWN .... 2 TO GO....

After 3 long years, it was Anthony's turn to get his braces off. It turned out that he only got the top ones off, because 1 tooth was still crooked on the bottom. So he'll need to wait until August 16th, and on that same day, he'll get his permanent retainer too.

With all the technology today, it still looks barbaric the way they work in your mouth!!

Taking the impression for the retainer, It is supposed too be flavored, but when I asked Anthony which one he got, he said his was yuck flavored!!

Almost done, just a cleaning to go....

There's that smile we all remember!!

Angelo's turn...

Angelo getting his impression for his Palate expander,
if you ask me, it's just a fancy way of saying "this will be $1,400.00 more then your insurance will pay"...

Wow what a big mouth!!

Angelo and Mario will be getting their braces on August 9th.... Stay tuned....

***** ROCCO'S NEW CAR *****

Rocco finally got his own new car tonight,
a 2007 Hyundai Tiburon.When he started to
drive 3 years ago his grandmother gave him
her 1994 Taurus. He was grateful but always
wanted to get a newer sportier car of his own.
He decided this summer was the right time.
He saved enough money by working over 50
hours each week, and only spent money when
he absolutely needed to. He looks so happy
and we are so happy for him too.
He's not the only one who's happy though,
Remember that 1994 Taurus?
Well that car now belongs to Anthony!!
He better be a really good mechanic because
that car has 4 more brothers to go through!!

Rocco signing away, and his proud dad!!

Congratulations!!

It fits him just fine!!

Everything looks great !!

FG radfam??

Back in 1996 after Mario was born, my best friend Steve, ( he has since passed away :(
Anyway, he asked me to put all the kids initials in order to see what / if they spelled anything . It came out RADFAM - Rocco, Anthony, Dominic, Franky, Angelo and Mario ! So I'm like Ok, radfam? But then we realized it was short for RADICAL FAMILY !! And let me tell you having 6 boys is radical, but that's another blog entry for another time !!! Back to the story.... Since then when I would sign some cards I would put, Frank, Gina and radfam, especially on those little stick on tags you use at Christmas!! There's no way 8 names fit on those! But then when I was really lazy, I would just put FG radfam and I was done. When the relatives would forget which kids were which and in what order they went in, I would just say remember RADFAM, and that's how it started. I have it on my computer as my screen saver and of course tattooed on my wrist. I was going to make it my license plate but I picked Yes6Sons instead , I'll explain that another time.
RADFAM ...... It's just a fun reminder of who's first, last and in between!!

IT'S ANGELO AND MARIO'S TURN !!

I brought Angelo and Mario to the Orthodontist today for their consultation and evaluation. Of course they need braces too !! Rocco had them, Dominic just got his off in March, and Anthony is getting his off on July 26, 2007. It's funny how they all needed glasses, except for Franky, and they all needed braces, except for Franky! Whats so different about Franky?? Anyway they will get them on August 9th 2007, just in time for school !!

I took these pictures at their appointment today, they think they're funny now, but in a few years I'm sure I'll hear it!!

MY TEA SET COLLECTION....

Years ago I went to a flea market and as I was looking around I spotted this bird nest miniature tea set. I thought it was the prettiest thing I ever saw. I wanted it so bad but didn't have the money for it. The guy who was selling it couldn't tell me where he would be next, so I thought I would never get it. I told Norma about it with a description and forgot about it. That was in October. Wouldn't you know it, she found it and got it for me for Christmas. That started MY TEA SET COLLECTION.... I have so many now they don't even fit in my curio.
I always had a collection of some sort, When I first got married, I started with owls, I had owls all over the house. Then Rocco came along and took care of that, whatever he didn't break he would throw out in the garbage, if we didn't check the garbage before it went in the can outside it was gone forever. Then I started collecting Precious Moments, that got expensive, then I went to plates. I have so many put away in my closet, like Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, Elvis (of course),etc. That got expensive too!! For now I'm sticking to My Tea Sets, they are pretty, easy to find and a lot cheaper!!

***** CONGRATULATIONS LINDSAY *****

Rocco's girlfriend Lindsay, passed her road test last Monday. The instructor said she passed with perfect results, even her parallel park was perfect!! I don't think I ever heard of anyone doing that!
Lindsay showing off her brand new car her parents bought for her!! She looks great in it.

Rocco and Lindsay have been going together for over a year now. Our whole family loves her as if she was always here. She and Rocco are made for each other, they are so kind and respectful with each other and she treats our family the same way, they are so much fun to be around. We couldn't ever find a more perfect addition to our family.
Franky picking up, Rocco, Lindsay,
and Daniella all at the same time! WOW

What a great looking couple! At Lindsay's prom in April 2007

THE GIRLS........

Here are our nieces, Alexandra,(in the middle) Jessica,(on the right) (the twins) and Christina. They are Frank's brother Carmine and his wife Maria's Girls. We of course had all the boys and he had all the girls!! It's funny how things work out like that. Anyway when we refer to them all we need to say is "The girls" and everyone knows who we're talking about. I guess when they refer to us, they say The Boys? They are here today for the afternoon being Maria is still in the intensive care unit, but Carmine says she's feeling better, and should be out by the weekend. They are such little ladies and are a pleasure to have here with the boys.

Thanks for all the prayers for Maria also.

Here they are all eating chicken noodle soup! Don't they realize it's about 100 degree's outside? Well that's what they wanted so that's what they got. This would make a good commercial for air conditioners!!
